Une biographie de Hergé créateur où les albums de Tintin sont lus comme un journal où transparaissent les événements, publics ou privés qui marquèrent Georges Remi. En quelque sorte, un roman de formation où le personnage semble avoir construit son auteur. Benoît Peeters a découvert de nombreuses sources inexploitées jusqu'à ce jour, dont deux correspondances essentielles : celles d'Hergé avec sa première femme (Germaine Kieckens) et son premier secrétaire (Marcel Dehaye). Ces lettres révèlent un Hergé fragile et tourmenté, un homme lucide mais dépressif qui songea à arrêter Tintin dès les années 40. B. Peeters a également rencontré de nombreux témoins, depuis le début des années 80, dont plusieurs qui n'avaient jamais été interrogés. Il se penche notamment sur une question qui passionne beaucoup de « tintinophiles », celle des «scénaristes de l'ombre» qui aidèrent le père de Tintin pour plusieurs de ses histoires.
